Panama City's Tocumen International Airport, kind of in the middle between Alaska and Fireland, names itself proudly "Hub of the Americas" and fulfills this role.
Additionally there are already Trans-Atlantic connections from Amsterdam, Frankfurt (Condor via SDQ, once per week), Lisboa, Madrid and Paris.
And it's getting better:
In February 2016 Emirates will open daily flights from Dubai and Turkish Airlines from Istanbul 3 days a week. Lufthansa will begin in March 2016 to fly from/to Frankfurt 5 days a week. The Emirates flight will then be the longest regular flight with 13:40 hrs.
More business and tourism.
